ABB E-mobility and PG&E Deploy Flexible Charging to Power the Transition to Electrified Fleets
Pacific Gas and Electric Company, one of the United States’ largest utilities serving 16 million Californians across a 70,000 square mile service area, is a pioneer in the effort to electrify mobility in North America. Starting as an early adopter with their own fleet, Oakland, California-based PG&E is transitioning all 9,500 fleet vehicles to electric by 2045 and has a goal to have 4,300 electrified by 2030.

PG&E’s EV fleet operates in a demanding environment and requires flexible charging infrastructure that can meet multiple use-cases with high utilization. Electric fleet vehicles ranging from light cars to day-hauling Class 8 trucks support PG&E’s day-to-day operations, including Gas Service vehicles, Electric Construction, Survey and Leak Detection, Locate and Mark, Engineering, Service Planning, Traffic Control, and others.

To provide efficient overnight and shift-based charging and the ability to rapidly top up fleet vehicles with a quick turnaround, PG&E requires a flexible charging approach and a dedicated partner.

To support overnight charging at 2 South Bay garages, PG&E installed the first three C50 compact chargers deployed in the United States. With a depth of just over 9 inches (23.5cm), the C50’s compact footprint allows for simplified installation in tight depot configurations. The upgraded user experience and ability to split power across two outlets also maximizes flexibility during emergency operations. The C50 deployment is part of ABB E-mobility’s Early Adopter Program, a global initiative aimed at gathering real-world insights.

Ultrafast Charging for High‑Demand Operations

PG&E has also deployed over a dozen A400 All-In-One chargers to deliver up to 400 kW of power for mission critical vehicles requiring a faster charge. A modular design and domain separation architecture ensures the A400 delivers maximum uptime performance and simplifies servicing, while also significantly reducing lifetime costs. From 50 kW to 400 kW, PG&E is equipped with the right ABB E-mobility DC fast-charging solutions to meet their fleet’s operational requirements.

Through its electrification journey, PG&E has identified reliability, serviceability and responsiveness as essential qualities in a charging infrastructure partner, and it’s why they’ve chosen to deepen their relationship with ABB E-mobility. By fostering a collaborative, communicative relationship that actively incorporates customer feedback, PG&E has been able to plan for and adopt charging solutions like the C50 and A400 that meet the specific needs of their fleet. When upgrades to ABB E-mobility charging infrastructure were required, a proactive approach made the transition seamless and kept PG&E’s mission-critical vehicles available.

What’s Next

With more than 500 active new outlets powered by ABB E-mobility since March 2024 and surpassing more than 800 total ports at 35 unique locations at the close of 2025, PG&E leads by example and influences the wider market to drive EV adoption in North America. As PG&E continues to scale its electrification efforts, its partnership with ABB E-mobility and deployment of the C50 and A400 chargers exemplifies a forward-thinking approach that not only supports operational needs but also accelerates the broader transition to a cleaner, more sustainable transportation future.
