Canada’s first ABB E-mobility C50 Chargers Redefine Retail Charging

ABB E-mobility and Ivy Charging Network have deployed the first C50 chargers in North America at SmartCentres in Orléans, Canada. Located between several retail locations, the upgraded site features two C50 chargers each delivering up to 50 kW across two outlets – a power output aligned to the duration of a typical shopping trip.

recent rental market study found that as many as 33 percent of Canadian households rent, and in the top 49 major Canadian cities, the share of renters is on the rise. For households where home charging isn’t an option, like some rentals, public charging opportunities remove a key barrier to wider EV adoption.

“Compact and easy to use, the C50 is designed to fit seamlessly into the retail shopping experience,” said Brandt Hastings, Chief Commercial Officer and President of North America at ABB E-mobility. “Charging can and should be a part of your normal shopping routine, and with Ivy Charging Network in Orléans, we’re making that experience more convenient and reliable for drivers.”

Every element of the upgraded charging experience at Orléans is designed to make charging more intuitive, convenient, and match the dwell time of customers. The C50’s award-winning HMI provides clarity at every step of the charging process – from LED lighting to indicate availability from across the parking lot to an adaptive user flow that reduces errors, raises charging success rates, and accommodates preferences. With 50 kW of power output, the C50 delivers an average week’s worth of charge (approx. 250 km) during a typical one-hour shopping trip.

“As part of a commitment to providing EV drivers with a charging service they can rely on, Ivy has invested in upgrades at key locations with trusted hardware partners like ABB E-mobility,” said Kush Obhrai, General Manager at Ivy Charging Network.”

More than a charger, the C50 can be a powerful brand asset for retailers. Measuring at an industry-leading depth of just 23.5 cm, its compact footprint enables the C50 to fit into a range of retail environments, like store entrances, parking lots, or garages. The 21.5” touchscreen and configurable HMI support the delivery of real-time charging status updates with a branded outro and idle screens. Ultimately, the C50 provides a retail charging experience that can increase the time customers spend at stores, and create new opportunities for branding, advertising, and loyalty.

The upgraded site at Orléans is now available in the Ivy app, where drivers can find the availability of all chargers at over 55 Level 3 Ivy Charging Network locations.
