Standards for Battery Electric Vehicle Charging and Energy Management

November 21, 2024

With consumer demand and ambitious government targets for zero-emissions vehicles, the growing number of battery electric vehicles (BEV) on the roads will need the support of widespread infrastructure. Developing sufficient and reliable charging equipment and resilient electrical grid requires the collaboration of the transportation sector with electrical utilities and manufacturers, as well as harmonization of safety rules and regulations across North America.

CSA Group standards-based solutions provide a systems approach to the deployment of BEV infrastructure and its seamless integration into the electrical grid across the continent.

CSA Group’s standards address design, performance, and safety requirements for the installation and maintenance of BEV charging infrastructure, including:

  • electric vehicle supply equipment
  • direct current fast chargers and wireless power transfer technologies
  • BEV charging cables
  • energy management and vehicle-to-grid systems
  • battery management systems
  • battery recycling and repurposing

CSA Group’s standards can facilitate the safe and sustainable implementation of charging and energy management technologies and help overcome the energy demand challenges. They also support the adoption of BEVs for various transportation modes, contributing to electrification and decarbonization of the transportation sector.
