Ontario Government Delivers New GTA Transmission Line On Time and Under Budget

Etobicoke Greenway Transmission Line will strengthen province’s energy grid to drive economic growth and power 300,000 homes
As part of its plan to protect Ontario and build a stronger, self-reliant economy, the Ontario government is marking the completion of another critical energy infrastructure project on time and under budget that will help the Greater Toronto Area keep pace with rising electricity demand. The new Etobicoke Greenway project, a 230-kilovolt line running 6.5 kilometres through an existing corridor between Richview and Manby Transformer Stations in Etobicoke, will deliver up to 300 megawatts of electricity, enough to power 300,000 homes in western Toronto, southern Mississauga and Oakville. During construction, the project supported 100 jobs and came in on time and $10 million under budget, with the savings being put toward a recreational trail alongside the transmission corridor.
“Ontario is growing and our government is making the investments needed to power that growth,” said Premier Doug Ford and MPP for Etobicoke North. “Bringing the Etobicoke Greenway project into service means more reliable electricity for new homes, businesses and public transit, and more good-paying jobs across Etobicoke and the province.”
Toronto’s electricity demand is expected to double by 2050, driven by population growth, housing construction, electrification and economic expansion. Meeting that demand requires strategic investments in new transmission infrastructure to ensure families and businesses continue to have access to reliable, affordable electricity. First identified in the Independent Electricity System Operator’s (IESO) 2019 Toronto Integrated Regional Resource Plan, the Richview to Manby project was proposed as a priority investment to strengthen reliability and increase electricity supply into western Toronto.
“As the GTA experiences unprecedented growth, our government is building a stronger economy and grid for our kids,” said Stephen Lecce, Minister of Energy and Mines. “Ontario has a plan to keep energy affordable and reliable, by planning ahead and building on time and under budget. This project was delivered $10 million under budget, allowing us to invest the savings in a large recreational trail system for local families. As we face ongoing threats from the U.S., our government is fortifying the economy by building made-in-Canada transmission lines and nuclear power. As we deliver the largest electricity buildout in a generation, our government will continue to keep costs down for families through the largest Energy Savings Program in Ontario history and the 10-cent reduction to the gas tax.”
To complete the project, Hydro One procured approximately 98 per cent of materials from Canadian companies to replace an existing idle transmission line and upgrade the Richview and Manby Transformer Stations, increasing the corridor’s capacity while making use of existing infrastructure to minimize impacts on surrounding communities.
The Ontario government is also advancing the Toronto Third Line (TTL), a major transmission project identified to meet the region’s rapidly growing electricity needs. Once built, the TTL will deliver up to 900 megawatts to Toronto’s downtown core to ensure the city has the power it needs to support new homes, economic growth and major infrastructure like transit.

The government’s plan to significantly expand energy infrastructure is an important part of Ontario’s first integrated energy plan, Energy for Generations, to ensure Ontario has the reliable, affordable power it needs to power new homes and drive economic growth.
