Electric Avenue Launches State of Charge-Based Idle Fees to Boost Charger Availability and Efficiency

November 13, 2024

Electric Avenue has introduced a cutting-edge feature in its charge management software, enabling charge point operators (CPOs) to set idle fees based on a vehicle’s State of Charge. Designed to address the increasing demand for efficient electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure, this feature encourages drivers to free up charging spots once their EV reaches a designated charge level, thereby enhancing charging station availability and reducing wait times for other users.

As the adoption of EVs continues to surge, charging availability has become a priority for both CPOs and drivers. Following in the footsteps of industry leaders like Tesla, who have recognized the value of idle fees, Electric Avenue’s new feature takes the concept further by allowing operators to set custom SoC thresholds for idle fees. These thresholds, adjustable in 5% increments from 75% to 100%, provide CPOs with flexibility and control, supporting efficient charging infrastructure across all EV makes and models.

How the New State of Charge-Based Idle Fees Work

Electric Avenue’s charge management software includes a new “Idle Period Detection (Parking)” setting, allowing operators to configure idle fees based on an EV’s State of Charge. When a vehicle reaches the set threshold, the session seamlessly transitions to idle, encouraging drivers to relocate and free up the charger for the next user. Drivers are notified via the Electric Avenue app and are given a 15-minute grace period to vacate the charger before idle fees apply.

“By offering customizable idle fees based on State of Charge, we’re promoting a fair and efficient charging network that benefits both CPOs and EV drivers,” said Mark MacDonald, President of Electric Avenue. “This feature aligns with our commitment to advancing accessible and intelligent EV charging solutions.”

Benefits for Charge Point Operators and Drivers

The State of Charge-based idle fees feature delivers distinct advantages for both operators and drivers:

  • For CPOs: Increased charger availability, reduced bottlenecks, and new revenue opportunities from idle fees, which can support station maintenance and upgrades.
  • For Drivers: Reduced wait times, transparent policies, and minimized “charger anxiety,” fostering a charging ecosystem that’s reliable and efficient.

This forward-thinking feature is part of Electric Avenue’s broader initiative to support an accessible, driver-friendly EV charging landscape. By offering tools that increase charger availability and network efficiency, Electric Avenue remains at the forefront of innovative EV charging solutions.
