Backgrounder: Government of Canada invests in electric vehicles

Backgrounder

On April 8, 2026, Karim Bardeesy, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Industry, on behalf of the Honourable Tim Hodgson, Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, announced $11.7 million for 15 EV charging infrastructure and education projects across Canada.

Zero-Emission Vehicle Infrastructure Program

These projects support the installation of electric vehicle chargers across Canada.

Recipient: Greater Toronto Airport Authority
Location: Mississauga, Ontario
Funding amount: $2,640,000
Description: The proponent will install 178 Level 2, 70 Level 3 (20–49 kW) and 14 Level 3 (50–99 kW) EV fast chargers. 

Recipient: Société de gestion Cogir S.E.NC. 
Location: Quebec
Funding amount: $2,452,500
Description: The proponent will install 981 Level 2 EV chargers. 

Recipient: Bracebridge Generation Ltd., operating as Lakeland EV Charging
Location: Ontario
Funding amount: $1,950,000
Description: The proponent will install 26 Level 3 (100–199 kW) EV charging ports across central Ontario.

Recipient: InterRent Holdings Manager Limited Partnership
Location: Ontario, British Columbia and Quebec
Funding amount: $735,000
Description: The proponent will install 147 Level 2 EV chargers.

Recipient: EV Start Inc.
Location: British Columbia, Nova Scotia, Ontario and Quebec
Funding amount: $520,000
Description: The proponent will install 104 Level 2 EV chargers.

Recipient: Corporation of the City of Niagara Falls
Location: Niagara Falls, Ontario
Funding amount: $465,000
Description: The proponent will install eight Level 2, three Level 3 (100–199 kW) and two Level 3 fast (200+ kW) EV chargers.

Recipient: Government of Prince Edward Island
Location: Prince Edward Island
Funding amount: $400,000
Description: The proponent will install 12 Level 3 EV chargers.

Location: London, Ontario
Funding amount: $365,757
Description: The proponent will install 11 EV chargers.

Funding amount: $360,000
Description: The proponent will install 30 EV chargers.

Location: Edmonton, Alberta 
Funding amount: $270,000
Description: The proponent will install 54 Level 2 EV chargers.

Recipient: Aho’s Homes Corp.
Location: Dwight, Ontario
Funding amount: $155,000
Description: The proponent will install one Level 2 and three Level 3 (100199 kW) EV chargers.

Recipient: Voisin Chrysler Ltd.
Location: Elmira, Ontario
Funding amount: $105,000
Description: The proponent will install one Level 2 charger and two Level 3 (5099 kW) EV chargers.

Recipient: Longo Brothers Fruit Markets 
Location: Vaughan, Ontario
Funding amount: $100,000
Description: The proponent will install 20 Level 2 EV chargers.

Recipient: Saputo Dairy Products Canada GP
Location: Alberta, Ontario, Quebec and Newfoundland and Labrador
Funding amount: $99,999
Description: The proponent will install 20 Level 2 EV chargers.

Education and awareness project funding

Funding amount: $1,100,000
Description: The proponent will expand its cross-country tour delivering EV education, EV test drives and charging demonstrations.
