Publicly owned stations to fill gap in province’s EV charging coverage

Manitoba Hydro has chosen the communities where the utility’s first electric vehicle (EV) charging stations will be located, a major step to creating the province’s only publicly owned EV charging network.

The initial phase of the project will see the installation of six EV charging sites between Winnipeg and Thompson, closing a major gap in Manitoba’s current EV charging network.

The chargers will be located along Highway 6 in the communities of Lundar, St. Martin (Pinaymootang First Nation), Grand Rapids (Misipawistik Cree Nation), Ponton (Pimicikamak Cree Nation), Wabowden (Pimicikamak Cree Nation), and Thompson (Nisichawayasihk Cree Nation).

Manitoba has hundreds of EV charging stations, but most stations are limited to major highways and southern communities.

“We’re excited to launch this new EV charging network, which bridges a gap in EV charging coverage and supports the province’s Manitoba Affordable Energy Plan,” said Manitoba Hydro President and CEO Allan Danroth. “The initiative builds on our partnerships with First Nations and unlocks new economic and tourism opportunities for northern communities.”

network map is available on Manitoba Hydro’s website. The exact location of each charging station within those communities is to be determined.

Through a public procurement process the utility will be engaging a third-party provider to install and operate the charging stations on behalf of the utility, but the system will be owned by Manitoba Hydro.

Five of the sites will be Level 3 chargers capable of fully charging 4 vehicles in 20 to 30 minutes.

The first phase of Manitoba’s EV charging network is due to be fully operational in spring 2027.
